Arr Travels

Welcome to Arr Travels: Our Journey, Your Adventure

So, you’ve landed on Arr Travels. If you’re wondering what this space is all about, let’s just say it’s more than pretty pictures (though there will definitely be those). This is our digital compass, marking a significant turn in our personal map.

We’re the Arrs. For twenty-two years, our “travels” have often revolved around school calendars, family vacations, and the delightful chaos of raising a human. But as 2026 kicks off, we’re embarking on a new chapter—one that’s bittersweet, exhilarating, and perfectly aligned with a long-held dream.

February 2026: The California Co-Pilot Program (and a Personal Triumph)

Next month, we’re packing the car for a cross-country mission to California. The primary objective? To gently (or perhaps dramatically, depending on the teenager’s mood) deposit our only child into his next great adventure on the West Coast. This isn’t just a drop-off; it’s a ceremonial passing of the torch. It signals our shift from being full-time family navigators to a duo, ready for what’s next.

But while we’re out there, crossing the country, I’m also crossing something off my personal travel bucket list: Hearst Castle. For 14 years, I lived in Southern California, always meaning to visit that architectural marvel perched on the hill. This trip? It’s finally happening. Consider it my personal scouting mission for the grand estates and historic artistry we dream of seeing across the pond.

The Silver Road to 2029: A 25th Anniversary Dream

And that brings us to the “long game.” In 2029, we’ll celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. A quarter-century together, and we figure that deserves something epic. Our dream is a multi-city European odyssey, a Silver Jubilee that will take us from the bustling streets of London and Paris to the historic charm of Bath and Edinburgh. And yes, we’ll definitely be making a pilgrimage to Manchester so my husband can cheer on his beloved Manchester City FC at Etihad Stadium—because what’s a romantic anniversary without a bit of futbol?

This blog isn’t just about sharing our adventures; it’s about documenting the process. The planning, the saving, the occasional marital debate over purchasing a kilt in Scotland. We’ll share what we learn, what we pack, and how we prepare for a trip that’s three years in the making.

Want to Be Part of Our Journey?

If you’re inspired by our journey (or just want to ensure my husband gets his Man City tickets), we’ve set up a Honeyfund account for our 25th-anniversary trip. Any contribution, big or small, will go directly towards making our Silver Jubilee European adventure an unforgettable reality. Consider it a virtual toast to our next 25 years—and the travels that come with them!

So, whether you’re here for the California tales, the European dreams, the planning hacks, or just to say “Arr!” with us, welcome aboard. Let the journey begin!

Journey to California: Day Two

The day began with a lady pulling up to our SUV in the parking lot of the Love’s in Lordsburg, NM and asking us if we wanted to give her leftover filet mignon to our dog, Hamilton. As tempting as it was to take expensive cuts of meat from a complete stranger at a...

Parlez-vous anglais?

Parlez-vous anglais?

I visited Paris on my own in May 2002, knowing a handful of words but, most importantly, how to ask if the person I was speaking to spoke English. Thankfully, they all did. This time, I’d like to be more confident while I’m there, so Tony and I are learning French...

Arr family tips for couples travel

First, remember this word…. goosefraba. Yes, it’s a nonsensical word, created for the film Anger Management, but the fictional origin of the word, that it’s an Inuit word for “calm down,” is a pleasant one, and one a counselor advised Tony and I to use to help ease anxiety. Believe me, you’ll have anxiety. When your flight gets delayed, or you can’t find your way to your accommodations, or someone tries, unsuccessfully, to steal your rental truck filled with your possessions for your cross-country move, but they manage to destroy the ignition so you have to be towed halfway across Los Angeles to have the truck repaired, so you’re 4 hours late beginning a 2 1/2 day drive after spending a week packing….goosefraba

Next, sense of humor is critical. C-R-I-T-I-C-A-L. Mind you, I’m not saying mine always remains intact, but I can write from experience…being able to laugh at the situation (and yourself) makes for a much more pleasant journey for everyone than stomping around grinding your teeth. Believe me, I’ve done both.

Lastly, don’t forget to document the silly, sweet, unusual stuff. Like the black cat I came across while visiting Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris 24 years ago. Or the line of Brit’s having a slash in the bushes at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebration in Green Park. Just be sure to put down your camera long enough to enjoy the surroundings first hand.
